the bhs pathway
We are passionate about training the future grooms, riders and instructors. With our experience of over 30 years in the industry, we have a wealth of knowledge we are ready to pass on.

Our student programme focusses on the individual and helps them to achieve their full potential in a friendly, supportive and professional environment.

Our programme can take you from Stage 1 all the way up to Stage 3 - at your own pace and time commitment.

There are various options which can be mixed and matched - for more details on each of them, click on the relevant buttons in the menu.

Stage 1
This can be done in 3 ways!

1. Formal Assessment

This is the traditional way that the Stage 1 is conducted. You train for it, have your skills record signed off and then book a formal assessment with an outside Assessor. You can take the Care and Riding sections separately if you wish, or all on the same day.

2. Progressive Riding Tests

If you want to take both the care and riding, these tests can be taken here. They are conducted on a continuous assessment basis which means that there is no pass or fail. Once you are up to standard, you are signed off. There is no skills record sign off or formal assessment. Once completed, you have direct entry into all parts of the Stage 2, provided that you have also completed the Silver Ride Safe award if you want to take Stage 2 ride.

3. Challenge Awards

If you wish to only do the Care element of the Stage 1, then you can complete the Silver Challenge Awards in: Caring for your horse, Knowing Your Horse, Handling your horse and Lunging your horse. These are again on continual assessment and once you have gained them, you have direct entry into Stage 2 Care and Lunge.

If you want to do the riding as well, or by itself, you can complete the Silver Flat Riding and Silver Ride Safe which will give you direct entry into the Stage 2 Riding.

Stage 2
There are 4 elements to the Stage 2

1. Care

2. Riding (flat and jump)

3. Lunge

4. Coaching

You can take them all separately, but if you want to take the Coaching, you need to have passed the other 3 first.

All are conducted as formal assessments and we hold them here 3 times a year. Prior to taking any assessment, you must first have had your skills record signed off.

Stage 3
There are 4 elements to the Stage 3

1. Care

2. Riding

3. Lunge

4. Coaching

All are conducted as formal assessments and we hold them here 3 times a year. Prior to taking any assessment, you must first have had your skills record signed off and hold the Stage 2 in the same section you wish to take. We are only able to offer Dressage Assessments here (as well as Care and Lunging), however, we are approved to provide training for the jumping and coaching.
